The 12 X-ellent Guest Stars of The X-Files
(Season 1)
My File # X-MAS.2009
Merry X-Mas Agents!
Sorry I couldn’t resist – Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!
Ok, here’s a list of My favorite guest stars from season 1.
This list is MY favorite characters -
not the most popular ones or the best actors.
Many of you will disagree with my list or want to know ‘why or why not’
a particular character made the list.
Please feel free to email Me or Donald, and give us your list – or just who you would have added or eliminated.
This list is just the characters that made me feel good when they appeared or made the episode extra intriguing with their charisma.
Some of these characters came back in later seasons so they
won’t qualify next year for my ‘Season 2 X-ellent guest stars Field Report’,
but they were ‘guests’ for this season so here they are:
Oh yeah, 1 last thing.
This list is based on how, and what, the character did in SEASON 1,
not later seasons.
For example, Nicholas Lea appeared as ‘Michael’ in ‘Gender Bender’,
not ‘Krycek’ – in season 1. So I can’t consider him as ‘Krycek’, only ‘Michael’.
And ‘Michael’ didn’t make my list.
Also, I love Skinner but his character didn’t develop until later seasons,
so that’s why he’s not listed.
That said, here’s the list:
13) Honorable mention:
David Peterson as Old John Barnett
and Alan Boyce as Young John Barnett in
YOUNG AT HEART
The old Barnett does a great job of taunting Mulder in the court room.
Unfortunately he only gets 1 line: “I’ll… get… you… ” (blows kiss)
The young Barnett also does a great job with the taunting on the phone.
It’s a great effect they use when you only see his mouth for most of the episode -
very eerie.
12) Steve Hytner as Dr. Denny Murphy in ICE
Denny adds a light hearted feel to the episode.
He’s very likable and animated.
11) Doug Hutchison as Eugene Victor Tooms in
SQUEEZE and TOOMS
Tooms is an iconic ‘monster of the week’ character and gave many people
nightmares. Agent Donald will probably disagree with me but I have to put Tooms at number 11, just because of how much I like the next characters.
10) Titus Welliver as Doug Spinney in DARKNESS FALLS
Spinney does an awesome job of conveying the ominous nature
of what’s happening in Darkness Falls.
He has kind of a wise guy attitude without being a jerk.
Also his low tone when he talks adds tension and suspense.
He’s the only character that I have 2 separate clips for.
I couldn’t decide which to use, so I used both.
9) All the ‘Eves’ in EVE
Harriet Sansom Harris as
Dr. Sally Kendrick/Eve 7, Eve 6, Eve 8
Erika Krievins as Cindy Reardon/Eve 10
Sabrina Krievins as Teena Simmons/Eve 9
This is my ‘cop-out’ pick.
I thought all the Eves played interesting characters,
plus I really liked the episode
so I wanted to include all 3 actresses that were Eves.
in FIRE
Cecil was very charismatic and played his part well.
I also love him in Firefly as ‘Badger’
7) Scott Bellis as Max Fenig in FALLLEN ANGEL
Who doesn’t like Max.
Smart, friendly though awkward, full of life.
He really draws you in and makes you “want to believe.”
6) Brad Dourif as Luther Lee Boggs in BEYOND THE SEA
Luther was so diverse and also full of charisma that you always wanted
to see what he would say next or who he would ‘channel’ next.
The actor Brad Dourif is in many of my favorite things, including:
Myst 3 (Exile), Dune, Lord of the Rings, Babylon 5 and more.
5) William B. Davis as “Cigarette Smoking Man”
in various episodes
CSM may be the best character here but his parts were small, mostly
consisting of smoking, standing and walking down aisles.
But he did that stuff better than anyone.
Plus, thankfully, the producers gave him a vital role as we went along.
So, I give you the Darth Vader of the X-Files,
with all 4 of the words he spoke this season.
4) Jimmy Herman as Ish in SHAPES
Ish is great.
The sound of his voice. That ‘look’ he has. His whole demeanor.
He projects leadership, mystery and friendship.
There’s just something about him that I really liked.
3) “The Lone Gunmen”
Bruce Harwood as John Fitzgerald Byers
Tom Braidwood as Melvin Frohike
Dean Haglund as Richard Langly
in E.B.E.
These guys had to go in as a team.
I don’t think any of you agents would disagree with me on that.
These guys were ground-breaking, interesting, geeky – but in the right way,
as well as being important to the X-Files.
This sound clip is a little longer because it’s for all 3 of them.
2) Jeff Kober as Bear in ICE
I don’t know anyone who didn’t like this character.
He’s my highest rated ‘Monster of the Week’ character of season 1
and maybe of all time.
Edgy with attitude and the only way out of the frozen isolation of the
Arctic Ice Core project, Bear was perfect as the only pilot crazy enough
to fly them up there.
The ‘Steven Tyler’ look just added to this guys persona.
1) Jerry Hardin as “Deep Throat”
in various episodes
Deep Throat was the best character and so important to the X-Files.
Every time you saw him was significant – as Mark Snow’s music would tell you.
That eerie mysterious music every time we saw him really set the scene.
Almost everything that Deep Throat said was profound, but sometimes he’d
throw in a joke about getting good tickets to a game or something, just to
lighten things up for a moment.
Thank you producers for getting him and bringing him back in flashbacks.
There it is.
Pending any petition from you guys,
there’s My Top 12 X-ellent Guest Stars of Season 1.
Thanks, and Merry X-Mas!
